Cero mackerel are a common fish around Key West year round. They are often caught by fisherman while fishing for yellowtail. Unlike the King Mackerel, which has seasonal availability due to regulated closures, Ceros can be harvested year ’round so you’ll usually see them in our market.
These are not only caught locally, they’re 100% local- they never stray far from Florida waters at all! They spawn offshore in summer and spend their days right near south Florida waters.
Nutritin-wise, it’s hard to beat the Cero Mackerel. Like its cousin the King Mackerel, it is a more oily fish and rich in omega 3 fatty acids. It’s not only rich is those good types of fatty acids, but also in Iron- one serving is 5% of your iron for the day.
Because of the oilier, rich nature of the cero filet, it makes for the most delicious smoked fish. Try it yourself- order some by clicking the “Add to Cart” button and healthy, fresh fish will be on its way to your door in no time.
